Frankston City South Ward Cr Brad Hill is reminding residents to take the lead on responsible pet ownership with paws-itive steps scoop the poop when out and about with their dogs.

“Dogs provide vital companionship and are much loved members of families across our municipality – this has been highlighted during the recent lockdowns with residents using their ‘exercise breaks’ to stay active with their canine friends across Frankston City,” Cr Hill said.

Cr Hill noted that with more people visiting parks, reserves and the popular foreshore boardwalk and path from Olivers Hill to nears Wells St, Frankston during lockdown, Council is receiving increased feedback from residents that dog waste is not being ‘scooped’ by some owners.

“While most people do the right thing, it’s important to remember that dog owners must pick up after their dog when in public and dispose of the waste appropriately. Council provides some dog waste bins in popular areas however owners are responsible for carrying their own plastic bags or scooper.

“We’ve listened to feedback from residents and acted – recently doubling cleaning on the Frankston foreshore boardwalk to pick up poop to seven days per week. There is a patrol mid-morning for cleaning, however, it is noted that gradually over the day, poop will again start to increase until clean up the next day,” Cr Hill said.

Cr Hill added that this is complemented by stickers placed on dog waste bins at all dog leash free areas in Frankston City late last year.

“Stickers on all dog waste bins were added and decals placed on the pavement in front of the bins to highlight the importance of disposing of dog waste properly. Residents are telling us clearly that dog waste left at sports ovals, along walk ways, in parks and reserves and on the beach seriously detracts from amenity and we’ve acted in response to this feedback.

“Council’s Compliance Officers also conduct proactive patrols regularly to talk with residents about responsible pet ownership including picking up after their dogs,” Cr Hill said.
