Shared user path connection
We’re improving pedestrian and bike rider safety and enhancing access to Frankston Railway Station by building a new shared user path along Dandenong Road East, Frankston.
The 615-metre concrete path will connect the existing paths at Cricklewood Avenue and Fletcher Road, providing a safe continuous link to Frankston Station.
This section of shared user path is also an important link in a much longer cycling network connecting Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula via Frankston.
The path alignment was informed by two stages of community consultation in 2022 and early 2023. During the first engagement, the community expressed concerns for the proposed number of mature trees (28) proposed to be removed to build the path on the nature strip and requested an alternative solution.
In April and May this year, Council went back to impacted community members, including nearby residents, bike riders and pedestrians who use the existing paths, and people who park in the area, with the previous option (Option A) and another (Option B) to build on the roadside. Most respondents (69 per cent), including people who park in area, voted for option B which will require the removal of 76 on-street parking bays from the west side of Dandenong Road East while preserving a majority of the mature trees with only five requiring removal. Some additional tree pruning will be required, ensuring the new path is safe for users.
Council is now proceeding with Option B, with works to begin on 25 October at the Cricklewood Avenue end the project.
As well as the construction of the new Shared User Path, the project will include:
- Landscaping works include weeding, mulching and tube stock planting
- New stormwater drainage
- Kerb and channel works
The project is fully funded by the Victorian Government through the Level Crossing Removal Project.
Construction impacts
Work hours are 7:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday and works will be staged to minimise impacts as much as possible.
On-street parking close to the works on both sides of Dandenong Road East will be restricted for the duration of works.
Access to properties will be maintained at all times, but some delays should be expected. Please allow extra time to travel.
Traffic management signage and staff will be in place. For your safety, please follow road works signs and instructions from traffic controllers onsite.
While we work with our contractors to minimise impacts as much as possible, residents should expect some dust and noise due to the nature of the works.
Thank you for your understanding as we deliver this important project to improve safety and access in Frankston City.
